London Transport's 1966 'reshaping plan' called for the elimination of all
crew operated routes and and their replacement by one person operated high capacity
single deckers. In order to speed up boarding times many of the new vehicles
were fitted with Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) machines. Passengers having the correct fare could use the
machines thus avoiding the queue to pay the driver. Unfortunately the equipment
proved to be unreliable in service and was mistrusted and little used by
passengers. Consequently the system was abandoned in 1979. 4 ex-LT buses from this
era are preserved complete with AFC equipment, they are DMS 1/132, MBA 582
and SMS 369
